Thematic Learning Resources

Introduction

Taufik's School (Ascot International School) uses the British Curriculum, and in Nursery I have discovered they are using thematic learning. For instance, last week was dedicated to "The Gingerbread Man", the story was read to the children repeatedly. They then baked the Gingerbread Man, ate him up. Made cutouts of him and other arts and craft related to this fairy tale.
The week before that they learnt about the "Three Little Pigs" and did the same thing.
This week it was Goldilock's & the Three Bears. I've decided to get into the roll of things and provide supporting activities at home that would enhance Taufik's learning. In addition to borrowing the same books from the library and reading it at home at bedtime, I also borrow books related to the same subject matter. Like things about bears, we are reading the habits of Koala Bears, we're also reading up on Berenstain Bears ("The Big Road Race", and "Berenstain Bears Go to School" etc).

I am sharing here the learning resources I found online and used to support Taufik's learning. Beginning with the fairy tale below.

Goldilocks & The Three Bears
Taufik is currently learning about Goldilocks and her adventures with the three bears. He's also being read the book "Bear" by Jez Alborough at school. To support his learning we are doing all sorts of bear related crafts and activities related to this subject. Here are the resources I used to enhance his learning. Most of them are from First School.

  1. Teddy Bears - Preschool Activities & Crafts (First School). First bear puzzle, bear puppets, first books etc.
  2. Goldilocks & the Three Bears - activities and crafts (First School). Puppets of the main characters, learning patterns (maths), colouring pages etc.
  3. Goldilocks & the Three Bears Puzzle - Excellent site, you can control the number of pieces, thereby increasing difficulty. Good for learning mouse control and coordination, plus familiarization with the computer.
  4. What will Bella wear? - Bella is a bear who wakes up and asks your child to help select the appropriate clothes to wear for the different weather she faces each day.
  5. Six Little Teddy Bears - an adorable online story that strengthens the child's understanding of numbers from one to six.
